Thought, interpersonal relationships, and knowledge form our mental image of how we view or regard ourselves, consequently how view ourselves determines our conflict engagement method. Personal power, as it relates to the authority, control and the influence we exert in an organization, is also a predictor of our conflict engagement method. Brad Hayes, VP of Marketing and Jill Kaplan-Zuckerman, VP of Course Development Brad is verbally aggressive and makes very little effort to be polite, or respectful. He has a superior view of his position and the power he welds. Brad insulted every department with the exception of Jill’s; by implying it was not necessary to possess good writing skills to perform the other functions in the company. In the private confessional, Brad revealed that he was comfortable being disliked, stating that he is purposefully blunt. He conflict style is destructively dominating and does not invite collaboration, but rather a winner take all approach that is polarizing. Jill is a good friend of the CEO, and may be employing the technique of appearing accommodating or obliging, to retain status through this link. Current Situation Regarding Prisons and Punishment

Although it may not be at the forefront of our minds, the current situation regarding prisons and punishment is worth discussing. On the matter of this often overlooked topic, Pope John Paul II said â€Å"Not to promote the interest of prisoners would be to make imprisonment a mere act of vengeance of the part of society, provoking only hatred in the prisoners themselves.† (July, 2000) The prison system is a global issue that affects the human potential, free will and innate goodness in man. (Lyons, 2003) The issue is in regard to how offenders are punished when incarcerated and debates what theory of punishment offenders should serve their sentence under. There are many forms of punishment adopted by institutions in order effectively punish prisoners. These methods of punishment are diverse in both procedures and outcomes; however they all maintain the same objective – to successfully punish offenders. While Catholics endorse a combination between reforming and rehabilitating both offenders and victims, Islam prefers a harsh deterrent and retributive approach using fear of punishment as an incentive to not engage in criminal activity and from a completely secular perspective both protective punishment and deterrent punishment can be deemed appropriate. Mill observes that regardless of what a person believes the root of a moral principle to be, his ultimate motivation is always subjective feeling. Mill focuses on if the feeling of duty is â€Å"innate or implanted,† mostly because this area is so confusing. To try and understand how both of these sanctions would affect choice, it could be explained as follows: If a religious leader, government professional or respected philosopher was to suggest to society that all our current morals were wrong and it was the purpose of humans to promote suffering among men, would society be able to change? People must be capable of internalizing this extraneous command, and convince their conscience that it is morally acceptable. But could a person force his mind to accept such a drastic and dramatic change? Mill would way that is most definitely possible, especially for this example. People could easily be educated and socialized and develop the internal sanctions to promote suffering, but they would be artificial feelings. Since these emotions are not particularly a part of human nature or experience, the society would end up reacting more on external sanctions, with internal reactions.
